Carmel Art Walk & Carmel Art Festival

Carmel Art Walk & Carmel Art Festival

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a picturesque town with a rich history and vibrant cultural scene. The local art community is a testament to this, with a plethora of galleries, museums, and public art installations that showcase the talents of local artists. Whether you are a seasoned art collector or simply enjoy browsing beautiful artwork, two events in May are sure to delight.

On the second Saturday of every month, visitors and locals alike gather for the Carmel Art Walk, a self-guided tour of over 15 art galleries and studios located in the town's downtown area. The galleries feature a diverse range of art styles and mediums, from traditional paintings to contemporary sculptures, and everything in between. This month’s art walk will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. During the art walk, visitors have the opportunity to meet local artists, view their work, and learn about their creative processes.

One of the highlights of the Carmel art scene is the annual Carmel Art Festival. This event, which takes place May 19-21, 2023, is a celebration of local artists, with over 50 participating artists exhibiting their work in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and more. Visitors can stroll through the show, meet the artists, and purchase their favorite pieces. A unique aspect of the local art scene is plein air painting, which involves artists painting outdoors in natural light. This technique has a long history in Carmel, with many artists drawn to the town's stunning scenery and vibrant community.

A Golfer's Paradise

A Golfer's Paradise

Invented in its modern form in 15th-century Scotland, golf was not a favorite pastime of Scottish King James II, who in 1457 outlawed the game for being an unsavory distraction from archery. Don’t get us wrong, we love bow-and-arrow sports, but at Bernardus Lodge & Spa, you’ll more often find us hitting 18 holes out on the green. Exactly which green is another question.

Our Carmel Valley resort is an easy ride from 19 elite courses, making Bernardus Lodge and Spa the perfect home base for your extended golfing vacation. As our guest, you’ll have access to luxury transportation, gourmet onsite dining, and an award-winning spa, where our expert massage therapists are eager to tailor a restorative sports massage to your individual needs to help you stay in peak playing condition. If you’re not yet familiar with the many fantastic golf courses in our area, don’t worry, we have top-notch concierge services as well. Just tell us a little about your ideal day on the fairway, and we’ll make all the arrangements.

Patricia Qualls: Cutting-Edge Art in Carmel Valley

Patricia Qualls: Cutting-Edge Art in Carmel Valley

If there is a conventional path to becoming an artist, Patricia Qualls definitely did not take it. A country girl by birth, Qualls grew up on a sprawling Tennessee farm where she learned to plow the fields.

Later, as an adult determined to trade the agrarian life for something more polished and urban, she moved to Nashville where she built a successful career as a stockbroker. Qualls then moved West, settling in California and swapping the fast-paced, impersonal exchange of the market for the slow, intimate work of a clinical psychologist. When she started painting, she thought of it as her own kind of therapy. Soon, however, others started to take an interest, and she’s now featured in the collections of celebrated institutions from San Francisco to Switzerland. To see Qualls at work and perhaps purchase her paintings, drop by her stunning Carmel Valley studio or Carmel gallery.
